Fabulous Over 40: Meet Shelly

Fabulous Over 40 Portrait of Shelly by Julie Hood Portraits

Age 60

About You:

What is your favorite trait about yourself?
My favorite trait about myself is my ability to talk to people. I find it easy to strike up a conversation with just about anyone and I enjoy learning about different perspectives and experiences. Being able to talk to people makes everyday interactions more meaningful to me.

Your Thoughts on Aging:

What are some of the things you enjoy now that you might not have appreciated in the past?
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to truly appreciate slowing down and embracing a simpler life. I’m able to find joy in the little things-watching the seasons change, viewing sunsets and sunrises, watching and listening to the birds in my backyard or just enjoying my flowers. Nature has a way of putting things into perspective, I don’t think my younger self would have taken time to appreciate this.

Future Aspirations:

What does it mean to you to live fully at this stage of life?
Living fully at this stage of life means embracing life with gratitude and a sense of adventure. I’ve learned to slow down and savor life, whether it’s enjoying nature, going for a walk or finding joy in simple pleasures. It’s more about embracing my life with confidence and freedom that comes with age. Every day is an opportunity to learn, grow and live.

Finding Joy:

What are you passionate about? What brings you joy?
I’m passionate about my family, my dog and photography. My family means everything to me and I cherish the time we spend together, whether it’s visiting my daughters or being on an adventure with my husband. My dog brings me joy, companionship and laughter. She is always ready for an adventure. Photography allows me to spend time with friends and get out and explore the wonders of nature.

Your Fabulous Over 40 Portrait Experience:

What made you decide to participate in the Fabulous Over 40 Portrait Experience?
I decided to participate in the Fabulous Over 40 Portrait Experience because I had just turned 60 and recently retired. I felt it was a milestone. By doing this I felt as though I was celebrating who I am and stepping outside my comfort zone. It reminded me that aging isn’t something to hide from-it’s something to embrace.
