Fabulous Over 40: Meet Melissa

Fabulous Over 40 Portrait of Melissa photographed by Julie Hood in Rocklin, CA

Age 53

About You:

Can you share a moment of triumph or success that you’re particularly proud of?
One moment of triumph that stands out is when I reclaimed my independence and rebuilt my life on my own terms. I don’t like being referred to as a victim of domestic violence; instead, I am a domestic violence survivor. Overcoming that chapter in my life and emerging stronger, more resilient, and more determined than ever is something I’m incredibly proud of.

What was one of the happiest moments of your life so far?
One of the happiest moments of my life was when I realized the power of my own strength and resilience. It hasn’t been just about surviving; it has been about reclaiming my life, creating new opportunities, and being proud of who I’ve become. A specific happy moment is seeing my kids and grandkids thriving, knowing that I played a role in nurturing each and every one of them, and building a strong family foundation!

Looking back on your life, what’s a lesson you’ve learned that has stayed with you?
A lesson that has stayed with me is “You are never too old to start over or reinvent yourself.” Life often takes unexpected turns, but it’s important to know that no matter where you are, you have the power to change your path, grow, and pursue what truly fulfills you.

When in your life, so far, have you felt most confident and why?
I’ve felt most confident during moments when I fully embraced my strengths and stood unapologetically in my truth. These moments come when I overcome obstacles or face fears head-on, like when I made decisions for my own growth and happiness. Confidence comes from understanding my worth, knowing I’m resilient, and trusting myself no matter what challenges come my way!

What is your favorite trait about yourself?
Being a mom and grandma is such a beautiful and meaningful part of my life! It’s a source of joy and pride to nurture and watch the next generations grow.

Your Thoughts on Aging:

Are there any myths you would like to bust about being over 40, 50, 60 or 70?
One myth I’d love to bust about being over 50 is the idea that life slows down or becomes less exciting. In reality, it’s a time when many people discover new passions, take on fresh challenges, and embrace personal growth in ways they never imagined before.

Another myth is that you lose your value or relevance as you age. In truth, the wisdom, experience, and strength gained over the years only increases your ability to impact the world in meaningful ways.

How has turning 40, 50, 60 or 70 changed your outlook on life?
Turning 50 has deepened my appreciation for the present moment and shifted my perspective on what truly matters. It’s no longer about chasing external markers of success but focusing on living authentically, cultivating deeper connections, and embracing my worth. I’ve learned to let go of perfection and trust that the journey, with all its twists and turns, is what shapes us.

How do you embrace the changes that come with getting older?
Embracing the changes that come with getting older means shifting the focus from what’s lost to what’s gained. It’s about appreciating the wisdom, the strength, and the self-awareness that come with life’s experiences. I embrace those changes by staying open to new experiences, continuously learning, and practicing self-compassion. It also means redefining beauty and confidence as not about perfection but about authenticity.

What are some of the things you enjoy now that you might not have appreciated in the past?
At 54, I’ve come to appreciate the little things more deeply – like quiet moments of reflection, spending time with loved ones without distractions, and savoring the simple joys of life. I also enjoy having the freedom to explore new interests or hobbies without the pressure to do it all. There’s a sense of peace in knowing what truly brings happiness and focusing on those things, rather than chasing after everything.

Future Aspirations:

What does it mean to you to live fully at this stage of life?
As a domestic violence survivor, living fully at this stage of life means celebrating my strength, using my voice to inspire others, and embracing the freedom to create a life that reflects my worth and values.

What is your favorite quote or motto that inspires you?
“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” — Carl Jung

What is the one piece of advice you would give your 20 something self?
You are stronger than you realize, and you don’t have to prove your worth to anyone. Trust yourself, set boundaries unapologetically, and never settle for less than you deserve!

Finding Joy:

What’s something that always makes you laugh, no matter how many times you hear or see it?
A great comedy scene or an inside joke with a close friend or loved one can always get me laughing, no matter how many times I hear it. There’s something about that familiar, perfectly timed humor that never gets old.

What are you passionate about? What brings you joy?
I’m passionate about meaningful conversations, resilience, and personal growth – helping people see their own strength and potential. What brings me joy is seeing people overcome obstacles, embrace their worth, and create lives they truly love.

What made you decide to participate in the Fabulous Over 40 Portrait Experience?
Participating in the Fabulous Over 40 Portrait Experience was a powerful way to celebrate my strength, resilience, and the journey that has shaped me. How did the photoshoot make you feel during and after the session?
During the session, I felt a mix of excitement, confidence, and even a little vulnerability at first, but as the shoot progressed, standing in my power, embracing my beauty, and seeing myself through a new lens brought a deep sense of pride.
