Fabulous Over 40: Meet Laurie

Age 61
About You:
Can you share a moment of triumph or success that you’re particularly proud of?
Changing careers after over 30 years in hospitality to working in Senior Living. I loved the excitement of hotels and the challenge of big conventions but the opportunity to work in an industry where we make a difference in people’s lives every day is incredibly satisfying. Now my “guests” don’t check out and I really have an opportunity to get to know them and help provide an environment where they can live their best lives every day.
What was one of the happiest moments of your life so far?
Watching my son grow into a man that I still love spending time with! A few years ago, we went home to visit family in Hawaii with my son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. Seeing my granddaughter experience the ocean for the first time was magical and brought so many happy memories of times at the beach with my son when he was young.
Looking back on your life, what’s a lesson you’ve learned that has stayed with you?
Being kind and considerate costs you nothing. Caring for and about people has brought me deep personal satisfaction and a sense of purpose.
When in your life, so far, have you felt most confident and why?
I think I am my most confident now. I have a career that energizes me and makes me want to continue knowing that what we do and the care we provide for seniors not only enriches their lives but also allows their families to know they are cared for in a safe environment.
What is your favorite trait about yourself?
My positive attitude. I believe that anything is possible if you persevere. I love to try new things and still have a sense of wonder about this world we live in and the people that inhabit it.
Your Thoughts on Aging:
Are there any myths you would like to bust about being over 40, 50, 60 or 70?
No matter how old you look on the outside, inside we are still young at heart. I occasionally have to remind myself that no matter how much I would like to do daring sports (like riding the luge) I would probably break something if I tried because I don’t bounce nearly as well as I used to!
How has turning 40, 50, 60 or 70 changed your outlook on life?
I think I am more at peace and I realize that the rough times pass. I don’t get upset as easily as I did when I was younger. It takes too much energy and I would much rather laugh than be annoyed. I have always been patient, but I am even more so now.
How do you embrace the changes that come with getting older?
I struggle sometimes with the way the world sees me versus how I see myself. The world sees an older woman but inside I am still the young lady who loves going to concerts and dancing the night away. I love to be silly and have fun and I think one of the things becoming a grandmother has done is allow me to be a little freer with that fun side of myself. I have always been a workaholic but now I can also be silly and talk about dragons and cartoon characters and play games with abandon.
What are some of the things you enjoy now that you might not have appreciated in the past?
I think I take the time to look at the stars, to marvel at the beauty of the flowering trees in the spring and butterflies. To gaze in awe at the Northern Lights and blow dandelion fluff without thinking about weeds but focusing on wishes instead.
Future Aspirations:
What’s one thing on your bucket list that you’re determined to accomplish and what’s your favorite thing you’ve checked off?
I want to go to the Venice Carnival. Going to the Christmas Markets in Germany.
What does it mean to you to live fully at this stage of life?
Making my good health a priority and doing things even if they are on the spur of the moment. I enjoy my home, but I love to get out and do something even if it’s just going for a walk.
What is your favorite quote or motto that inspires you?
“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely place. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” I truly believe there is magic in the little things we encounter each day if we just take the time to see it.
What is the one piece of advice you would give your 20 something self?
You will only be 20 for a short time and before you know it you will be old and wondering where the years have gone. Don’t work so much that you forget to live.
Finding Joy:
What’s something that always makes you laugh, no matter how many times you hear or see it?
An old Carol Burnett skit with Dick Van Dyke, Tim Conway, and Vicki Lawrence. Tim is talking about elephants, and it makes me laugh even though I have seen it more times than I can count. The best part is watching everyone else try not to laugh in front of a live audience.
What are you passionate about? What brings you joy?
Caring for others. Doing things to let people know how special they are. I wish everyone could see themselves through the eyes of others. Most of us don’t understand how we impact people’s lives. I lost my oldest sister when I was a senior in high school and I have always wondered if she knew how much I loved her. I try to take the time to let people know they are special to me and to acknowledge nice things they do so they can feel appreciated.
Your Fabulous Over 40 Portrait Experience:
What made you decide to participate in the Fabulous Over 40 Portrait Experience?
I hadn’t had a professional picture taken since my high school graduation and I thought it might be fun. I had seen the beautiful pictures she had done of a friend of mine and wanted to feel that pretty.
How did the photoshoot make you feel during and after the session?
It was fun! I was relaxed and I didn’t feel self-conscious at all. I thought the photos were much better than I expected! They were really special and something I will treasure.
How did this portrait experience change the way you see yourself?
I realized that even though I am older my personality still shines through in my pictures.
